I have very predictable periods, sometimes it’s so painful and other time I tend to feel nothing.

During those so painful ones, my moods are over the moon, the sun is all red and dark. It tends to rain thunderstorms and hailstorms, and I can hear the roaring of the lion in my body.

But,since I began to honor the roar of my menstrual period, the experience has had a great turn. I have had to incorporate simple menstrual rituals into the cycle that have changed my view of the period.

I sleep and take a lot of water, exercise and let myself cry when the pain persists and shout within my crying, if need be. I no longer hold it anymore, no more just saying ‘am not feeling well,’ nedda (No!). I tell whoever asks how I am with no fear or favour, and not because I want to hear sympathies and empathies but because I like talking about it, it  makes me feel better that I can share my experience and in return hear others.

Menstruation is here to stay and no matter what I do, it will not stop hurting (I have told myself that for long time) maybe when I clock 50 and above(Menopause) and even then I think I will miss it.

Until that happens I am not letting this little blood which is not even a litre ( I tried to measure it) take over my youth. Those 5 days it takes are pure agony but I discovered how to get the best out of them.

Resting a lot has been a great remedy,  I actually that those days off any work that needs me to think above my pain and constant on it. I tell my body to feel the pain to its depth, even let it find the silver lining better the sweet, pain, pain and no pain.

Even at the sight of the first strain, I don’t panick as I used too, I thank God that I am still a  woman and give Him His glory. I have heard women give testimonies at my church how they had not had their menstrual blood for months and God did a miracle for them.

Then comes the thought of comfort food (hot chocolate, millet porridge, pizzas and green vegetables (we are talking eggplants, cucumbers, and all the green eatable plants) and the warm water bottle. These are my companions throughout the 5 days.

Then the cycle review also happens instantly as the thought for comfortable food availability is taking lead. The Period Calendar App (You can find it on Android) is a great menstrual cycle monitor that I have used for four years. It has kept me upto date on the changes in my cycle days and symptoms and strain level.

The App has also helped me evaluate my emotions and health in regard to the period. Like how heavy is the flow, how is my temperature and the general mood, what about the energy and PMS symptoms.

And then there are those crazy handpicked comfort gifts that tend to arrive during this period that I be looking forward to. These have made me look forward to my period, it’s like receiving a birthday gift every month.

It’s no longer have hatred or dreading worry toward my menstrual cycle but rather I look at it as a gift that keeps on giving every month.

  1. I had crippling pains for years, until I read somewhere about the high that one gets around ovulation.

    When I knew what that was, I started to notice it, and go with it. It’s so different when you know what it is.

    Since then I didn’t have one single hour of menstrual pain ever again, and it’s been many years, and I was so angry that noone had told me before, because I was already over thirty at the time!
